Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT is a structured and goal-oriented approach to therapy. It is based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, and behaviours influence and reinforce each other. In CBT we work on understanding negative cycles of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and how these affect the emotional problems we are experiencing. We then work on developing more helpful ways of thinking and behaving, with the aim of alleviating emotional pain (such as from stress, anxiety, or low mood).
CBT offers a range of treatment models and tools to challenge and moderate ways of thinking and behaving. The tools are overall about you gaining knowledge and understanding of how thoughts and behaviours maintain the problem, about moderating biases in your thinking, and practising alternative behaviours.
